Abstract :
Exemestan is part of a general group of drugs called aromatase inhibitors. Normally
in the body, some of the androgens (male hormones) that are made by the adrenal glands are converted to estrogen by an enzyme in fat tissue called aromatase. This drug blocks aromatase so that estrogen isn formed that way. This lowers estrogen levels in women who do not have functioning ovaries. This drug doesn affect estrog-en production from the ovaries, so has little effect on estrogen levels in women whose ovaries are working. If estrogen levels are lowered, breast cancers that require estrogen to grow may stop growing or even shrink.
Developed to help fight breast cancer, Aromasin is one of the most powerful estrog-en suppressing compounds available for body builders taking anabolic steroids. Additionally, it also raises testosterone in the body, which is a bonus for bodybuilders during post-cycle-therapy.
Aromasin (Exemestan) is one of those weird compounds that nobody really knows what to do with. Its a third generation Aromatase Inhibitor (AI) just like Arimidex (Anastrozol) and Femera (Letrozol).

In women who have had their menopause, oestrogen is mainly produced by changing androgens (sex hormones produced by the adrenal glands) into oestrogens. This process is called aromatisation and
happens mainly in the fatty tissues, muscle and the skin. It needs a particular enzyme called aromatase. Exemestan blocks the process of aromatisation. So it lowers the amount of oestrogen in the body. In early breast cancer, taking exemestane can help to stop breast cancer coming back. In advanced breast cancer the cancer cells may grow more slowly or stop growing completely.
Hormones are chemical substances that are produced by glands in the body, which enter the bloodstream and cause effects in other tissues. For example, the hormone testosterone made in the testicles and is responsible for male characteristics such as deepening voice and increased body hair. The use of hormone therapy to treat cancer is based on the observation that receptors for specific hormones thatare needed for cell growth are on the surface of some tumor cells. Hormone therapies work by stopping the production of a certain hormone, blocking hormone receptors, or substituting chemically similar agents for the active hormone, which cannot be used by the tumor cell. The different types of hormone therapies are categorized by their function and/or the type of hormone that is affected.
